Our next stop in Gros Morne National Park was at a campground called Green Point. Bernadette did her magic once again when she got up at 5:00 a.m. one cold morning in February five months earlier and secured this special spot. There we were at a site overlooking the ocean from high atop the cliffs at Green Point. Watching the sunset on our first night will always be a treasured memory for both us, and Gordie too.
While the west coast of Newfoundland is literally filled with incredible highlights, our boat tour of the Western Brook Pond was definitely one of our top picks. While most of our days we awoke to cool, sunny days, with a sprinkling of heavy winds, the day of our boat tour at Western Brook, it was foggy and rainy. Just like one of our family barbeques back home. Not knowing whether or not the tour would go off as planned, we decided to continue, with fingers crossed.

This is a tour that takes a little effort to get to because of the fact that Western Brook Pond is a large inland freshwater fjord that requires a three kilometer hike to get to the boat. If you need to, there are also golf cart shuttles that can take you to and from for a small feel. Of course, this is not for us, and we set off on foot. It was a beautiful hike that passed through cool lakes, lichen filled bogs and stunning forests — all perfect spots for spotting a Moose. Of course, to Bernadette’s chagrin, the Moose were once again hidden throughout our hike.

When we arrived at the pond, the sun had magically broken through the heavy mist and we were blessed with an awesome sunny, clear, blue sky. The crew claimed that this was the nicest day for a tour in years. I can’t imagine a better day.
The sites throughout the two hour tour of Western Brook Pond are amazing with towering green cliffs (sometimes almost twice the height of Toronto’s CN Tower), gorgeous waterfalls, and the shimmering sparkles of the lake. One of the crew pointed out to us that just the other day, there was a Moose standing right there on the shore. Of course, it was. Just not today.
It was another picture perfect experience on our visit. And hopefully these collection of photos do Western Brook Pond justice. If you are ever visiting Gros Morne, this is a must do activity and one you will always treasure.

The jaw dropping scenery, the unique culture, and the special foods of Newfoundland make it a place like no other. But, the real secret sauce of this unique province are the Newfoundlanders themselves. Their warmth, kindness and easy laughs make it such a special place to visit. We may have come from away to get here, but it was the people we met along the way who made us feel more like we were coming home.
Thank you Newfoundlanders. Best kind. Loves it. We’ll see you again down the road.
