Bumps and Bigfoot

We finally got our first question submitted to LDBugChronicles@gmail.com! And the question is, “How is it driving along the Oregon Coast? That is a great question.

The Oregon Coast is a path so stunning, that everyone should put it on your bucket list. On our drive north from Brooking, we were blessed with the most awesome sun-filled views of the Pacific Ocean. Like serious views Dude.

Of course, I saw nothing as I was laser focused on the road ahead as it was constantly swerving, swirling, dipping, upping, downing, and careening along these most breath taking routes. I commend the state of Oregon for their pristine highways.  However, every now and then, we would come across a very big sign with an arrow pointing directly down that said, “BUMP!” And before we could do anything, we were air borne… on the side of a beautiful cliff somewhere in Oregon. With our airborne Ladybug behind.

You might ask,  “Why didn’t they put a sign out sooner, like a football field away from the bump?” While air borne, I asked myself the exact same question. No one really knows why.  So my advice is to take the bumps in stride and keep focused on your landing.  It’s so fun pulling a travel trailer in Oregon … especially with my happy camper beside me … smiling all the time.

The Oregon Coast is a must do drive for anyone with an RV or whatever you are driving.  It touches your soul and is a memory that you will always cherish. Take the time to stop at pullouts and absorb the amazing scenery. And watch out for those giant BUMP signs.

Besides the bountiful ocean views, beaches and forests, the other thing you will see along the Oregon Coast are endless wood carvings, photos or actual dressed up folks who look exactly like the world’s all-time hide-and-seek champion, that giant, evasive, woodland guy better known as, “Bigfoot!”

I know what you’re thinking. These folks are losing it. Bigfoot does not exist. And I gotta admit, I used to be with you. Pretty far-fetched to think that some massive woodland creature has never really been seen except for fuzzy photos that look like one of my brothers running into the woods on a canoeing trip.

But strange things happen in Oregon in the dark. The other night I awoke to the most frightening sound I have ever heard, I shook Bernadette and whispered, “Honey! Was that you snoring like a crazy, scary animal?” Her reply was something that is not very appropriate for a blog. Suffice to say, I deduced that it was not my darling wife snoring. (Heck, she never snores!)

It must have been someone, or something else outside in the dark of night, right beside Ladybug. So, I braced myself, “Someone has to take charge of this terrifying situation.”

I took a deep breath, and slowly creaked open the door.  With my toes glued firmly to the floor, I leaned out and peered down one side of Ladybug and then the other.  “Hey! Who’s out there? If you don’t leave, I’ll sick my dog on you. I mean it! He’s a killer!”

And then, this overly fed racoon just sauntered by with a look that was like,  “Hey man, I was just trying to get a peaceful snooze…”  (Are racoons following us from Oakville?)

Of course, Bernadette was awake as her semi-brave guy returned. “What the heck are you doing Peter? It’s the middle of the night!” I reassured her that all was fine and I had successfully scared off a raccoon, thinking it might be Bigfoot snoring beside Ladybug. Bernadette sat quietly, but stared loudly at me, “Get to sleep Peter. You’re losing your marbles.”

I curled under the covers, hoping to quickly find dreamland, when I was startled yet again by another creepy sound. It was a distinctive, deep, guttural chuckling from outside.  I leapt out of bed and flung open the door.  That’s when I spotted it. Out in the black of night, where only fuzzy pictures are taken, I saw a giant, hulking, hairy creature running into the nearby woods laughing hysterically.

I swear this is true and I saw what I saw. It had to be that brute of a beast, Bigfoot! Who else could have looked so eerily similar to one of my brothers running into the forest on a canoe trip. They too, have really big feet.

Bumps and Bigfoot are all part of the fun of travelling along the Oregon Coast. You will love it.
