After rounding the Gaspe, we set our sights heading west towards our next stop in Levis, Quebec. We purposely picked this spot because it was so close to a ferry that could take us across the St. Lawrence River to visit one of our favourite places, Quebec City. It was a really good plan until the owner of our campground informed us that the Quebec City transit had just gone on strike. So… no ferry. C’est domage.
Sometimes on any adventure, stuff will happen and you just have to adjust and move on. Instead of making the 15 minute ferry crossing into the heart of old Quebec City, we moved to our plan B which meant making an hour-long drive through dense construction sites before getting to the most fun time, the search for a parking spot. Bernadette knows that I am not at my best in crowded situations and, at times, it takes all of her immense charm to keep me from having a meltdown. But, after endlessly driving back and forth across the packed parking zone, my happy navigator spotted an open spot where I was able to squeeze Bear into place. Another miracle performed by St. Bernadette.

Whoever dreamt up Quebec’s motto, “La Belle Province” was likely gazing out his or her window somewhere in Quebec City when they had their Eureka moment. This city oozes beauty as it stands proudly within its remparts overlooking the mighty St. Lawrence River below. Visitors are treated to Quebec’s unique culture and a bevy of historic architecture, stunning parks, museums, restaurants, art, music, street performers…. the list goes on.
As Bernadette, Gordie and I wove our way throughout the inner streets, we came across a sign outside of a restaurant containing these two magical words, “Try Poutine!” Some marketing genius must have come up with those words because they instantly inspired me to jam on my walking brakes. “Honey, we gotta eat here.”
For those who have never tried poutine, I am sad to say that you are missing out on one of life’s true joys. Poutine is at the top of Quebec’s many culinary treasures. It consists of three main ingredients – French fries, gobs of cheese curds strewn on top, all swimming in dark, rich gravy. There are some who include other ingredients like smoked meat, chicken, green onions, or anything else in their fridge. But, being a traditional kind of guy, just toss the core three ingredients together and I will always be happy. Poutine is a gift for the soul and tummy.

There is such a friendly, fun vibe as you stroll along cobble-stoned streets exploring one of Canada’s oldest cities. And, if you are as lucky as me, it’s always better to be slowly strolling holding hands with a smiling saint. Talk about being in a Heavenly place. Merci Quebec City. Merci Poutine. Merci St. Bernadette.
